Considering the recent times, Mac has been the choice of majority of masses for two reasons : Firstly, It’s UNIX shell wearing the user friendly coat is a blessing for Developers. Secondly, even if you are not able to run many of the outstanding apps and games on Mac, you are free to dual boot your machine to handle your day-to-day Windows task.

Everything comes with a cost and as I mentioned in my previous post on Fix : The Windows Support Software Could Not Be Saved To The Selected Drive [Boot Camp]from the time I opened Boot Camp till I was successful in installing Windows, everything was just nightmare for me. But the entire process was worth the wait.

Sometimes the successful Windows installation might also not relieve you as soon as you get to know “WTF! My Headphones Not Working In Windows 8.1” or “Inbuilt Speaker output is too low“. Before we begin, please make sure you have installed all your Bootcamp drivers from the Apple Bootcamp Support page. In case you haven’t installed the Support software yet, head over to Apple Bootcamp Support Software page, locate your Mac model and download the drivers.

Please be patient as the support drivers are of 1GB size, download time depends upon the speed of Internet connection.

Step 1: Login to your Windows partition and head over to Device Manager -> Audio Inputs & Outputs. Check if all the three drivers are installed. If there are no drivers, download the Cirrus drivers for Windows 8.1 and install them. In case drivers are installed, just download the above drivers and don’t install them until mentioned.

Step 2: Select Headphones -> Right click and Properties -> Drivers.

Step 3: Hit Update Driver and opt Browse my computer for Driver Software. Provide the path where downloaded drivers are stored. It’ll start updating the drivers, please be patient, it might take few minutes.

Step 4: Reboot your Mac into Windows partition and check if you can get those headphones working.

Step 1: Head over to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.

Step 2: Now in the control panel, navigate to Sounds and tap on it.

Step 3: Please make sure you have connected the Headphones to your Mac. In case you have connected headphones and still seeing “Not plugged in” warning besides headphone symbol (as shown in the screenshot below), please reinstall the Apple Support Software and see if you are downloading the support software compatible to your Mac only.

step 4: If you are seeing the green tick sign besides the headphones symbol (as shown in the screenshot below) and still not able to figure out why headphones not working in Windows 8.1 , we are just a step away from making them work.


Double click on the Headphones option.

Step 5: You’ll see volume level is by default set to 0. Slide it up and set it to level best suited for you. Similarly, if you facing the same issue for Internal speakers, you can follow the same step
