Recover Damaged Files From Pendrive Using CMD
Many of you face the problem of getting your Pendrive damaged or infected by some virus attacks. So, to recover your damaged files from the pen drive, you can try CMD(Command Prompt) first to recover virus infected files. It is free, easy to use and most importantly you don’t have to install as it comes pre-downloaded in your Windows. Now, following are the steps to recover files from virus infected pen drive-
For demonstration purpose, I am using Windows 10 here. Rest assured, steps remains the same for other Windows version.
Step 1: Foremost step is to connect any pen drive or hard disk to your PC.
Step 2: Head over to the Start menu and type CMD in the search box. Wait for a while and then, click on the Command Prompt.
Step 3: Now, type this command chkdsk E: /r and then press the Enter key.
[Note: If your memory disk is not using the E:\ drive, replace e: with the appropriate drive letter].
Step 4: You will see that Windows will provide you the basic information about the drive and it will start to scan immediately.
Step 5: Once the Windows is done with the scan of your hard disk, it will prompt you to repair those damaged files. As you can see from the screenshot below, in my case, the drive was error-free. Hence, no actions have to be taken further.
[Note: However, if in your hard disk error occurs, then simply type the following command attrib -h -r -s /s /d e:\*.* (any one of the following) and press Enter key. The hard disk will begin to repair the damaged files].
Here, the alphabet with the following command means-
- –r : These are readable files, but cannot be changed
- –s : Files for use by the operating system
- –h : Files are hidden & not displayed in a directory listing
- /s : Processes matching files
- /d : Processes folders as well
After the repairing process gets finished, you can simply go back to your drive to check if you can successfully recover your data from USB or hard drive which was infected with the virus. By this times, your files must have been repaired but if it doesn’t, then you can go for a third-party data recovery software.

Though using CMD seems to be the most convenient way of recovering corrupted files from Pendrive, it’s still not the best way as sometimes it does not work properly and also, it may not scan the infected files deeply. Also, if the drive size is bigger, it takes a lot of time to scan the files.
