Encrypted Files can be stored in Windows operating system in a storage system called the Encrypted File System (EFS). The EFS keeps your confidential files in an encrypted format and hence provides security to your data. When you encrypt any file or folder, then the encrypted file or folder gets a lock superimposed on it which indicates that it’s an encrypted file. But if you don’t want anyone to know that it is an encrypted folder, you can Remove the Lock Icon from Encrypted Folders in Windows.
The Lock icon means that you have a private item in a non-private directory. This indicates that it is a file or folder with special permissions and that the user is restricted from performing some operations on that file or folder. The following article will show you how to customize or remove the lock icon overlay on files and folders encrypted by Encrypting File System (EFS).
How to Remove the Lock Icon from Encrypted Folders in Windows:
Step 1: First you have to open Run window by pressing (window icon + R). As soon as you are done, run menu will appear. Enter “Regedit” in the blank space and click Ok.
Step 2: Now after you open Regedit a menu appears on the screen. Follow the condition in the menu mentioned below-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Step 3: Once you are done with it, Right click on the Explorer menu. A pop-up appears. Now click on the New option and then click on Key.
Step 4: The following will create a new blank key. We will name it as XYZ Icons.
Step 5: As soon as we create a new key, we have to create a new string value and point it towards the blank icon. For doing that, we have to select the newly created key, right-click on the XYZ Icons and select the option “New> String Value.”
Step 6: After creating a new string value, we will name it as 123.
Step 7: Now, after naming the string value, we have to double-click on it. After that, you have to enter the path to the blank ICO file and click on the “OK” button.
Step 8: Finally, restart your system and you will no longer see the lock icon in the encrypted folder.
Please Note: In future, if you want to revert it back, then you have to right-click on the string value and then select the “Delete” option.
